Sidewalks must be kept in good repair. Homeowners may be held liable for injuries resulting form breaks, cracks, and uneven sections in their sidewalks. Please note that pursuant to the master Document and the City Code of Ordinances, " the owner of real estate adjoining any sidewalk is responsible for replacing defective sections of the sidewalk using material similar to that used in
the existing construction " [Section 17 - 147].Replacement runs about $4.50 a square foot; one section of sidewalk typically measures about 16 square feet. You may qualify for reimbursement from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) of up to fifty percent (50%) of the cost of these repairs, up to $2.25 per square foot. All repairs must conform to LFUCG standards.
To be eligible for reimbursement, LFUCG first must confirm the sidewalk needs to be replaced or repaired. Call the Division of Code Enforcement (258-3270) to start this process or to report other sidewalks in disrepair. Once the city has cited the property, the homeowner has 120 days to make repairs. City inspectors mark areas with a pink "X" that are in need of repair or replacement.
